They practice for hours every week to become very good at keeping themselves above, on, and under the water's surface for a certain amount of time and have complete control of their bodies. Synchronized swimming is not a win-lose sport. Teams finish in first, second, or third place just like figure skaters do. You can say Russia won the gold medal, but that does not necessarily make everyone else a loser.
