If the dishwasher hums and will not start, it usually means the circulation motor has seized up. Do not attempt to keep it running for long periods. You will over heat the motor if it’s not running properly. In rare occasion, glass, chicken bones, popcorn kernels, and believe it or not jewelry can make its way past the filters and stop the wash pump. This is no easy fix if that’s the problem. Other times the wash pump stops working by itself. If either one is the problem it won’t be worth fixing.

∙ 14y agoIt sounds as though the dishwasher is blocked with dirt form the dishes. Thoroughly clean the filter and run through on the hottest cycle with no dishes except with some bleach in a bowl. This should help sterilise the dishwasher as well as clean it.Then run through on a full cycle with the detergent tab.

The problem may not be the dishwasher. All dishwashers should be on its own 20 amp breaker and hard wired. Even portable units that use a plug should be on its own circuit line but often not. If the dishwasher is tied into other appliances or plugs, it can over load and trip the breaker. If this is the only you can run the dishwasher, shut the breaker off and see what else is turned off and avoid leaving them on while dishwasher is running. Hopefully it’s not the refrigerator!

I would say that either the bearings in the motor are worn out ,so the motor has a hard time turning. Or it may be that one of the motor windings (electric coils) is bad. I would replace the disposer.

It probably just has something jammed in it. In the center of the motor on the bottom, there is a place for a hex key so that you can turn the motor by hand. A tool was supplied with the disposal and may be under the sink somewhere. Second better option. Use a wooden broom handle in the top to unjam it. Use the opening of the disposal as the pivot point and pry the blades around to dislodge whatever is stuck in it. It may be that the disposal is old enough that the motor has rusted. In which case it needs to be replaced.
