I have a totaled 1998 Taurus but the transmission is fine. Can I put the 1998's transmission into a 2001 Ford Taurus that needs a new one?

Yes you can. The transmission is about the same with minor changes to some of the brackets. You can replace those brackets with the brackets off the transmission from the 2001

I can't answer re. all cars, but the transmission fluid dipstick in my Ford Taurus is as easy to get to as the oil dipstick. Since the transmission fluid also often needs checked frequently my guess is it is usually as easy.

Depends what is wrong with the transmission, and the condition. If it is something major like gears needing replaced ($250+), your looking at a lot more money. Possibly transmission fluid needs replaced for easier smoother shifting, which is no big deal ($5-10). Hopefully the whole thing will not need to be replaced or your looking at a few thousand dollars!
