I think that the topic could be interesting. Try to examine a large number of different birthday cards, and see if a pattern emerges, in terms of the attitudes that they embody. I would expect to see a celebration of growing up, and a bitter-sweet sense of accomplishment and loss connected to growing old. Gender is harder to pin down, except perhaps that young girls are thought to be cuter than young boys. But see what you can observe.
