While it may seem boring now with just one color of paint on the walls and without accent color. Painting the room in light colors-beige, light blue, a shade of white (and there are many!) will make the room appear larger. Also, declutter; all of us tend to put too much unnecessary "stuff" in a room. That makes it look smaller, too. If you have a large closet, try putting the dresser in there. That will give you a lot of extra space. Shelves, instead of bedside tables also appear more spacious. Don't hang a lot of things on all the walls. Try to focus on one area, perhaps over a desk. That would be an ideal place for a message board. Another trick to enlarge a space is to hang a mirror; preferably on a wall across from a window to reflect the light and the outdoor scene. Now, you're ready for the TAH DAH! Decide one color that you love to add pop to the decor in the form of pillows, area rug, curtains, lamp shades, desk accessories...you get the idea...nothing big, just little eye catchers. Good luck.

At fifteen, you will have some ideas about your favourite things, colours, fashions etc. That is where your inspiration should come from.

Start with your clothing. Do you wear a lot of any one colour? If you wear a colour because a) it make you happy and b) it looks good on you (not just because it's trendy) then you should incorporate that colour (or colours) into your room.

I do not say you should paint your entire room black, or dark purple... even if that is the only colour you wear. a) Because it will be very nearly impossible to get your parent's permission, b) because that has been done to death and you said you want to be different and c) it will be a beast to paint over when you tire of it, change your tastes or move.

Spend a little time looking at decorating magazines... you can find them at your local library (so you don't have to spend a lot of money doing the research)

I recommend you pick a classic colour, that you find soothing and pleasant. For example if you wear lots of dark purple, try a light greyed taupe with a purpley tone. Or if you like Earthy tones try a soft tan or very pale green

Add your colour with the "soft" items... (linens, comforters, pillows, window treatments) or with good pieces of art work.

You might want to pick a poster or something of that nature, but be sure to put it into a frame (which can also add touches of colour), putting up pictures with thumb tacks (or tape), although commonly done, ruins the art work and damages the wall. An inexpensive frame can be used over and over and always look great (it will tend to get parental approval too).

If your bedroom furniture is older, and you have the go ahead from your parents, you may want to paint the hard surfaces (headboard, dresser, end tables, desk) and possibly recover an old upholster chair in the deep colour you like.

Small pieces, like a chair or lots of pillows can be bright and a bit "wild" adding touches of your favorite colours without over whelming the room or breaking the pocketbook, when you decide to change things.

If you are at the point you need new furniture, pick solid classic pieces that you can take with you when you move into your first apartment. And don't forget a good desk.

Lastly you would be surprised what a difference lighting can make in a room. The old overhead lights are never enough. Task lighting on your desk where you do most of your work and mood lighting elsewhere (look into coloured lamp shades to add soft colour).
