I'm going to Germany with my class for 5 weeks the first we'll be traveling via train for 2 week and spend 2 weeks living with families in Cologne then 1 week traveling Will a medium Duffel bag work?

I was in Germany for 3 weeks and traveled all over. It sounds like you'll be doing a lot of traveling and moving about, too, so a smaller duffel bag would probably be more practical and easier to maintain. However, if you are planning on collecting a good amount of souvenirs then you need to make sure you bring a bag big enough to carry all of your newly acquired treasures. Another option is to mail things home (especially larger or valuable items you don't want to carry around). Just remember, though, that it can be a bit expensive to mail things abroad. Overall, I would recommend taking the smallest bag you can reasonably get away with. I'm assuming that you will be able to do laundry at the different places that you will be staying. You should also assume that you will pick up a few clothing items/tokens of Germany. Regardless, make sure you don't pack your bag till it's bursting! Trust me. You will definitely appreciate the extra room later!
