This question obviously asks for a conjecture and I make no claims to accuracy. In my opinion, very little would be different today if someone else had served the four years that were Pierce's term. The president does not pass legislation and he was not a great influence over Congress , but if he was responsible to passing the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the US was moving towards a breakup of the union over slavery regardless of what Pierce did or did not do.
The later break-up of the union might have been handled differently and possibly Civil War did not have to result, but that was after Pierces left power. ( I am suggesting that if the Republicans had not the election of 1860 and if Lincoln had not become President or even he had lost in 1864, things might be noticeably different )
Black people are still slaves up to this time if not for Roosevelt
We wouldn't have the heavy elements... and as a result, we wouldn't exist.

The American Liberty League was a political organization formed in 1934 by conservative Democrats and Republicans to oppose President Franklin Roosevelt and his policies. Despite their efforts, Roosevelt was elected in a landslide in 1936 and the League started to disintegrate. By 1940 it ceased to exist.
