It was far preferable for women to be married in colonial America. If a woman was married, she had someone to protect her and provide for her. If she was not married, she had to take care of herself, and that was very difficult for a woman to do in colonial times.

Is it wise for a widow to date a married man?

Just as a single or married woman should not date a married man neither should a widow. 'Widow' does not give a priviledge to break the rules. No, it is not wise to date a married man. Being a widow is lonely, but there is no future in dating a married man and most widows once over their grieving period want a future of sorts which may include divorced; widower; or single man to be in their lives or the widow may be happy just having her friends and her family around her. Be wise, stay away from married men.

Is it right to address a widow as 'Mrs'?

Yes, widows consider themselves still married. Some widows will stay single throughout their lives, while others may remarry. Many widows feel vulnerable and will even leave their phone number under their husband's name and the bills can still come to "Mrs. M. Smith" if her husband's name was, for instance, Michael. If the widow is younger, it's also appropriate to address her as "Ms." (pronounced "Mizz"). Some widows may prefer to go back to her surname before marriage. Customs (and laws) may vary. In the Netherlands, for example, a widow reverts to her maiden name 12 months after being widowed, unless she makes a request to keep her married name.

What are the chances of dying single?

Some people prefer not to get married and those that wait into their late 20's; 30's and up it gets harder to find a mate because by then most are married, but, some are divorced and some widowed (depending on your age.) The chances of dying single is high and here is why. You may have a mate, but if you are a woman the statistics prove that women live longer than men and you may well end up being a widow so once again you are single. Statistics show that there are better chances for widowed men to remarry than widows finding another man in their life if they are 50 years or older.

What did widows in the English colonies do with their husbands land?

Widowers would be granted temporary control over the family land. Husbands often arranged for their widows to manage their estates until the eldest son reached age 21. Few woman received land outright, and if the widows remarried, their new spouses usually took control of the estates left by their first husbands.
