The iPhone is a global effort. Tens of thousands of people at more than 30 companies on 3 continents work together to make Apple's first phone possible. Apple, of course, designs the product, and also created the single most important 'component' - the software that gives the iPhone its unique personality.

But, while Apple gets the credit, Behind the Scenes there are a host of other players, each of which has to build and deliver complex parts on schedule to make the iPhone possible. Some of them are well known names, like US-based Intel, which supplies the NOR flash chips which hold the iPhone's updatable system software; and Korea's Samsung, which makes the video processor IC. Two famous names from consumer electronics, Japan's Sharp and Sanyo Epson, are among the suppliers of the phone's bright 3.5-inch display.

The Foxconn Technology Group is a multinational business group anchored by the Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. a Republic of China-registered corporation headquartered in Tucheng, Taiwan.

Foxconn is the largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components worldwide, and mainly manufactures on contract to other companies. Among other things, Foxconn produces the Mac mini, the iPod, the iPad, and the iPhone for Apple Inc.; Intel-branded motherboards for Intel Corp.; various orders for American computer manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard; motherboards for UK computer manufacturer Zoostorm; the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for Sony; the Wii for Nintendo; the Xbox 360 for Microsoft, cell phones for Motorola, the Amazon Kindle, and Cisco equipment.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. has won the Apple franchise in China and will begin to expand distribution network this year.

The company, currently Taiwan`s No.1 manufacturing conglomerate by market revenue, will initially gain market share in China for Apple products via its established outlet Cybermart Digital Square and its consumer electronics business unit, which is led by H.L. Chiang, a former Apple executive.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Shenzhen is a walled factory city of 270,000 Hon Hai (Foxconn) employees. They have everything from a hospital, fire station, swimming pool, athletic field a separate area for the Basketball courts and even a bookstore (see pictures below).

Besides Apple iPods and iPhones, Hon Hai workers/residents make Dell and Hewlett Packard PCs, Motorola and Nokia cell phones, Sony PlayStation 2 and PSP and the Nintendo Wii. It's a nice place to live and all, but with no Starbucks (you'll have to go outside the walls), I don't think it's the place for me. But imagine being young and just out of college and not knowing exactly what to do with your life.

A walled-in community of 270,000 young factory workers (with approximately 135,000 of those wearing a skirt, or at least a tight blouse (see pictures below) might not sound too bad at all.

The iPhone is not really "an invention" - it is a developement of several already-existing inventions, building on the knowledge of mobile phones, MP4 players and computers.
