Medieval art was mostly religious and concerned with conveying Christian beliefs and values. Renaissance art was less focused on religion and more focused on the daily life of people. The style of renaissance painting itself was also much more realistic than medieval art, meaning that renaissance artists were very concerned with proportions and showing the details of their subject.

The Renaissance was a period of revolutionary change in politics, science, religon and especially art. The biggest difference between Renaissance art and Medieval art was the focus on artisitic realism. Famous artists like Davinci and Michelangelo developed the use of depth and perspective drawing. The idea of foreshortening was also discovered here. The Renaissance also allowed a time for artists to focus their craft more on the world and the nature of man opposed to religion and secular beliefs. Art also helped the economy because art socially reflected how wealthy a family was to others. There are 6 main charcteristics surrounding Renaissance art that differentiates it from medival art, which are: the use of expression, the use of perspective ("vanishing point"), the use of classicism (Greek/Roman influenced), emphasis on the individual, the geometrical arrangement of figures and the use of shadowing. Medival art was beautiful, but Renaissance art was very 3 dimentional and life-like. Michelangelo's David sculpture is said to be so realistic that it looks as though it is breathing. It is truly amazing that someone could have sculpted that beautiful statue out of one solid piece of marble. This is how Renaissance art greatly differs from Medieval art.

Rennaisance art used perception, a very new concept for artists of the time, and had a noticeable vanishing point while Medieval art did not. Also, many Renaissance artists preferred to paint frescoes, and used oil based colours.

What themes were not a major focus of renaissance art as opposed to medieval art?

Renaissance Art indulged in a movement called "Humanism". Humanism was traced back to Classical times. The Greeks believed that "Man was the measure of all things." Renaissance literally means "rebirth" or "revival". It was the revival of classical teachings and studies. Medieval times did not have humanist movements. Medieval times were synonymous with the Dark Ages. The Plague and many strict religious movements occurred during this time. Medieval art was simple and devoutly religious, or it consisted of merely patterns and calligraphy. Celtic knots, for example, emerged during medieval art. Renaissance Art included far more. Renaissance Art encompassed everything from the late Byzantine period to the very early Mannerist and Baroque paintings. Renaissance Art had images of religious figures (Jesus, Mary, St. Gabriel, God, etc.) in various situations. Medieval Art was similarly religious. However, during the Renaissance, people were more concerned with life on Earth than they were with their lives after death. During the Medieval times, religious art was intended to put fear into the hearts of the viewers. Religious art was supposed to frighten the humble worshiper and inspire fear and love in his heart. Renaissance Art shifted the focus to the importance of "Man" (hence the humanist movement). Man's life on Earth out shadowed his life after death. This was a skeletal explanation.
