Dennis R MacDonald (The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark) believes the name, Barabbas, was a play on words that originated in Mark's Gospel and was, in due course, copied by the authors of the other three New Testament gospels. The gospels tell us that Jesus was the Son of the Father. 'Barabbas' is also a word that means Son of the Father. By calling to Barabbas to be released, the Jews simply released the wrong Son of the Father.

The story and answer is in Matthew 27:15-26. Pilate believed the people would surely release Jesus - a man who only did good works, over a notorious insurrectionist and a murderer (see Mark 15:7; Luke 23:19, 25). However, the religious authorities had other plans to see fulfilled.
Matthew 27:20-21New King James Version (NKJV)20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?"
They said, "Barabbas!"
These 'religious' men used a 'tumult' (verse 24) which put Pilate in a box as he already had a history of conflicts with the Jews and did not want another on his record. Pilate announced again Jesus to be innocent and symbolically washed his hands of blood - vainly attempting to rid himself of the apparent guilt he was feeling and the thread his wife had that day in a dream of condemning an innocent man to death.
In their frenzy, the crowd said, 'His blood be on us and our children.' Many through the ages have pointed to this statement and the destruction of Jerusalem and eventually being banded from the land as two results of this sin (Matthew 23:31-39).
The incident with Barabbas can be found in each Gospel, beginning at the following: Matthew 27:16, Mark 15:11, Luke 23:18, John 18:39.
Barabbas .
As a prisoner could be released , the people asked for the release of Barabbas.
Barabbas was the criminal that was released at the trial of Jesus.
The New Testament does not specifically list who Barabbas killed. It is only mentioned that he was a criminal and murderer freed in exchange for Jesus's arrest.
Every year one prisoner would be released, but you know that. The prisoner was chosen based on the will of the people, and the people called for Barabbas to be released (Matt. 27:21-22, Mark 15:9-11, John 18:39-40). If you want to know why they wanted Barabbas out instead of Jesus, only they and God know.
Barabbas was released, but the Bible does not say what happened to him subsequently.

A:At the trial of Jesus, Pontius Pilate is said to have offered to free one of his two prisoners as a gift to the Jews for the Passover. The Jews chose to free Barabbas. Barabbas means 'Son of the Father' in Aramaic, so it has been suggested that this episode was a play on words. The Jews, in releasing Barabbas instead of Jesus, had released the wrongSon of the Father.
