Jane Austen started writing very early on and practiced through her childhood. Whether she did it consciously or not, she practiced her art continually until she was an adult. She began her first published novels when she was about twenty years old, in 1795. Her first income from a novel was in 1803, when she was paid ten pounds for an early manuscript for Northanger Abbey. That book was not published until after she died, and it was not until 1811, when she was 36 that any of her work was published.

Jane Austen seems to have begun the first draft of Pride and Prejudice, under the working title of First Impressions, about 1795, when she was twenty. The book was not published until 1813, when she was thirty eight, and it was worked on at different times in between.

Jane Austen's first full length novel was Elinor and Marianne, written when she was twenty or twenty-one. This novel, of course, was later edited and was published as Sense and Sensibility.

She wrote a story sometimes referred to as a novel, called Love and Freindship [sic], starting when she was about eleven years old. She also wrote what is described as a short novel called Lady Susan when she was eighteen to twenty years old. By current standards, neither would be considered a novel, because they are too short; they might be called a novellas.
