The length of yarn in a skein varies greatly with brand, variety, etc. You can determine the length of the yarn by looking on the front of the label, where it is listed along with weight, recommended needle/hook size and dye lot

A skein of yarn can come in all kinds of weights, or thickness, and sizes. The length and weight vary by brand. A skein is a unit package of interlocked fibers. The paper wrapping the skein should tell you how many yards it is and how much it weighs. Some common sizes are 25g, 50g, and 100g skeins. Some companies measure in ounces, with some common sizes being three-, four-, six-, and eight-ounce skeins.

The amout of yarn in each skein varies ALOT!!!!! Each brand makes a different sized skein. check the label. it will tell you both the yardage and the ounces.. and the new scale of weight for the thickness of the thread.

Your answer depends on the skein. It's yardage is listed on the label.

If the label is missing, take your skein to a local yarn shop and ask if anyone can help you approximate its length given its weight.

What do you call a ball of yarn?

Yarn comes in different "gatherings"--ways that it can be sold. Your question mentioned 2 out of the three: ball of yarn and skein of yarn. The third would be a Hank of yarn. A hank is a skein of yarn (which is yarn in a large oblong shape, and tied in a few places around the skein to maintain a bit of control over the yarn staying in that loose shape), which has been twisted around itself to make for a smaller and more controllable yarn, which is easier to pack, and store. A hank also is a bit more manageable than a skein of yarn. A ball of yarn would be wound from a skein or a hank.

How many skeins of worsted yarn is 18 oz?

There isn't a way to figure out how many skeins of worsted yarn would equal 18 oz. You would need to look at the yarn, and see how many ounces are in that particular skein and go from there. The word "weight" in yarn refers to the size or thicknessof the strand of yarn, not an actual ounce, pound, gram or kilogram. Then the size or thickness would be measured by how many stitches are in 4 inches. The Yarn Council of America has a guideline for "weight" measurement for yarns. The reason there are variables in the actual skein ounces, grams weight, is that different fibers of the same length would weigh differently--some are lighter or heavier than others.

Is there a difference in amount of yarn in a skein verses a hank of yarn?

While there are general standards, there are no absolute standards for the amount of yarn in either a skein or a hank. The amount depends on the weight of the yarn and which fibres are including in its spinning.

Is yarn sold in balls?

I believe the spelling is skein. It is a package of yarn looped to make it easy to pull a yarn thread from the center of the skein and either use it or wrap it into a ball. This is how it is typically sold. However, there are some stores that sell yarn in balls.
