very few people had cars, so many had to hitchhike or 'Ride the Roads'. Riding the roads was where people went from train to train to travel. This was the main way of transportation. Many children and teens used this method, as well as men. There were also whole families. Riding the roads was extremely dangerous as if you did not hop into the cart at the right moment you could hurt yourself, or kill yourself.
