Daffodils are full sun perennials that can tolerate some shade, but need 6 hours of daily sunlight to produce flowers. This much sunlight is also needed to maintain the plant tissues and to store sugars in the bulb for next year's growth and flower.

The thing is, if you want daffodil flowers, then the plant needs to make enough food to do so. The food is made from light energy. To have pretty flowers, the plant needs to absorb 6 hours of sunlight during each day. If all you want is the leaf growth, they they can be kept in a more shady area. However, I must warn you that if it is too shady, the leaves will not be able to make enough food to keep the bulb alive through its dormancy, and the hardy clumps of daffodils might disappear.
