one or two pennies
I tried to find the answer to this question and did a bit of research both on colonial America and England. I found out that newspapers were not distributed very well in colonial America due to transportation costs and printing costs. Newspapers were started by printers as handbills and were not like newspapers we have today. In London there was the Gazette that had a circulation of 11,000 in 1705, but nothing gives the price of a paper in this time. One article mentioned that people did subscribe to a paper/handbill/newspaper but often didn't pay for it and that they were passed from person to person to read.
In the 1700s, the price of a newspaper varied depending on factors such as location, size, and quality. Generally, newspapers in the 1700s cost around one or two pence, making them relatively affordable for the literate population of that time.
Newspapers of that time could not be bought individually- only by yearly subscription. The going rate was $2 a year- with $1 paid up front, and the remainder due before the end of the year. Newspapers were printed weekly.
