Contrary to internet myths, there is no evidence that President Obama is in fact spending unusual amounts of money; nor is there credible evidence that he has spent more time on vacation that other presidents. It should be noted that no matter which party is in office, the other side always claims the president and his wife are wasteful, and this president has received the same criticism that his immediate predecessor, George W. Bush did.

While we do not have exact dollar amounts, it is a fact that President Obama has spent fewer days on vacation that President Bush did up to this point in his presidency. On the other hand, at least one of the president's vacations was controversial: it involved the expense of taking his family to Hawaii, and some websites claimed this would cost as much as $4 million. But this amount included flying not only the First Family but also members of the White House Press Corps, the Secret Service, and several top presidential advisers (a president is never really on vacation).

It should also be noted that all presidents receive a salary that is paid by the taxpayers, and included is an additional sum for travel expenses, money for entertaining, etc. Again, there is no evidence Mr. Obama has spent more than he was allotted; further, fact-checking websites analyzed his use of Air Force One, and found no evidence that he used it as much as President Bush did. I enclose a link to one of the fact-checking sites, which analyzed how much the president spent on travel in 2009-2010.

Government How Much Did Obama's Family Vacation Cost Taxpayers? Dec. 30, 2010 1:26pmJonathon M. Seidl

Over $1.4 million. That's the generous estimate of how much the Obama family vacation cost taxpayers this Christmas. $1,474,200 to be exact.

The Hawaii Reporter compiled an estimated account of expenses for the Obama trip and found that, before factoring in unknown costs, taxpayers forked over almost $1.5 million. Here's how the paper broke it down:

  • Mrs. Obama's early flight to Hawaii: $63,000 (White House Dossier)
  • Obama's round trip flight to Hawaii: $1 million (GAO estimates)
  • Housing in beachfront homes for Secret Service and Seals in Kailua ($1,200 a day for 14 days): $16,800
  • Costs for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel: $134,400 ($400 per day for 24 staff) - excluding meals and other room costs
  • Police overtime: $250,000 (2009 costs reported by Honolulu Police Department)
  • Ambulance: $10,000 (City Spokesperson)
  • TOTAL COST: $1,474,200

Then there are the unknown costs:

  • Rental of office building in Kailua on canal
  • Security upgrades and additional phone lines
  • Costs for car rentals and fuel for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel (Secret Service imports most of the cars used here to escort the president)
  • Surveillance before the president arrives
  • Travel costs for Secret Service and White House staff traveling ahead of the President

Yes, the president deserves a vacation. But the paper suggests that the Obamas could have used housing on military bases to save on costs such as security and housing for support personnel:

They could have chosen a less expensive and more secure place to stay such as a beachfront home on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station - just a two-minute drive away from the Kailuana Place property where they are now. The president visits the military base daily to workout, bowl with his kids or enjoy the more private beach there. He also could have stayed at a home 15 minutes away on the beach fronting Bellows Air Force Base as President Bill Clinton did.

No more than other modern presidents, and a lot less than some. Contrary to internet myths, usually spread on conservative or Republican websites, there is no evidence that President Obama is in fact spending unusual amounts of money; nor is there credible evidence that he has spent more time on vacation that other presidents. It should be noted that no matter which party is in office, the other side always claims the president and his wife are wasteful, and this president has received the same criticism that his immediate predecessor, George W. Rebuttal: Bush may have spent more time on vacation, but most of the time spent on vacation was at his own ranch. The same goes for Ronald Reagan. Both spent more time on vacations, but less money because they spent those days at their own houses. President Barack Obama has spent over twice as many hours on vacation and golf (976 hours) as he has in economic meetings of any kind (474.4 hours)....... How much do the Obama's cost taxpayers?

Thursday, Dec 6, 2013 at 5:10 AM CST...The answer: $1.4 billion so far ! Taxpayers spent $1.4 billion dollars on staffing, housing, flying and entertaining President Obama and his family.

First, let's talk about how much it won't cost: in November 2010, President Obama made an official trip to India. Some conservative newspapers claimed the trip would cost more than $200 million a day (some claimed as much as $400 million a day). They also made other equally far-fetched claims, such as that the president was being accompanied by 34 warships and an entourage of more than 3000 people. These claims were all debunked by the major fact-checking sites: the president's trip did not cost anywhere near $200 million a day, he was not accompanied by 3000 people, and the Pentagon said there were not 34 warships accompanying him-- which would have been 10% of the navy.

While it is customary to keep some of the costs of presidential trips private (for security reasons, we are never told how many secret service agents accompany him, to cite one example), we do know that presidential trips to foreign countries can be expensive, but they are necessary. For example, when Bill Clinton traveled to China for twelve days in 1999 (on a combined trade mission and meetings with Chinese government leaders), it cost about $18.8 million total (about $2.1 million a day), and he was accompanied by 500 people, many of whom were business and technology executives. I enclose a link to one of the many fact-checking sites that analyzed the real costs of presidential trips, including Mr. Obama's visit to India.

First, it is difficult to answer this question because we do not know which vacation you are wondering about. But presidential vacations are not unusual: all presidents go on vacation. And contrary to opinions expressed on TV and radio Talk Shows, President Obama's vacations have not been any more expensive, nor any longer, than those of his predecessors, Presidents Bush and Clinton.

It should be noted that it is very common for the opponents of the party in power to claim the current president is spending outrageous amounts on vacations. Usually, such claims are exaggerated: for example, in 2010, an internet rumor claimed that President Obama wasted taxpayer money by having a private plane fly his dog to the family's Maine vacation. But it turned out this was a myth and no such flight took place. There was another internet claim that president Obama took more vacation days than any president in history, but that too turned out to be false.

This is a difficult question to answer, and one we are often asked-- there are some internet rumors that President Obama spent more money on vacations than any other president in the history of humanity. Those rumors are false and quite exaggerated (Michele Bachmann once claimed President Obama was spending four million dollars a day on a trip, and that was totally untrue). It should also be noted that such claims are often politically motivated. And nearly every modern president has been accused of wasting taxpayer money, in fact.

But that said, there may be a grain of truth in some of the assertions. Presidential vacations happen to be very expensive, no matter who takes them. It's not that presidents are extravagant-- it's that they need a lot of people to accompany them. They need protection (usually from the Secret Service, but at times from local officers); they need special access to the best telecommunications; they need a safe and private hotel; and they need to fly with an entourage of aides, assistants, and advisers. Thus, even a simple presidential trip can cost quite a lot.

But most taxpayers understand the need for our presidents to travel and represent us in other countries, as well as spending a few days away from the pressures of the White House. The exact totals for presidential vacations (Mr. Obama's among them) are generally confidential (the cost of secret service protection is considered classified); but other than on partisan anti-Obama sites, there is no evidence his expenses have been substantially more than those of President Bush or President Clinton.

How much have taxpayers been billed by all the vacation trips the Obama's have taken since January 2009?

The numbers are not all in yet, but taxpayers have been billed huge amounts for all of the vacation trips the Obamas have taken since January 2009. The bill for 2011 alone was $1.4 billion, and a single trip to Hawaii -- the Obamas go every year -- costs about $4 million. It looks like 2013 will cost the taxpayers even more than 2011, with trips to Africa, Martha's Vineyard, Hawaii and more. It should be noted however that any holiday by ANY president will always necessarily be hugely expensive, and not by any doing of the President himself. Airtravel can never be made by regular airliner but is for security reasons always made with Air Force 1, which is by itself the most expensive plane ever. Cars cannot for security reasons be rented locally, but specially designed an secure cars weighing a few tonnes each have to be taken wherever he goes. And his holiday destinations have to be turned into Executive Headquarters and be heavily guarded and when necessary, adapted. Of course he has to have a great number of staff to travel with him (also counted as "the President's" travel costs) , because the business of governing goes on and God forbid that a crisis should happen while he was away and alone with his family. And the list goes on.
