The answer depends on several factors: Your employer may provide some paid maternity leave benefits. The vast majority of U.S. employers do not fund this benefit. Your state may have mandated short term disability which will pay a benefit for your maternity leave. Those states are CA, HI, NJ, NY and RI. You can purchase individual short term disability before you concieve, and your maternity leave would be a covered benefit. You also get coverage in case of pregnancy complications, delivery complications, accidents and illnesses.

The answer depends upon the state where you work, your employer maternity leave benefits, and whether you bought individual short term disability insurance before getting pregnant.

Five states have mandatory short term disability coverage that pays a benefit for maternity leave: CA, HI, NJ, NY, RI. Check your state department of labor.

A small portion of employers provide maternity leave pay as part of their maternity leave benefit policy. Check with your employer.

Most employers offer nothing. You can get individual short term disability before getting pregnant, and the policy will replace up to 2/3 of your gross pay while out on maternity leave.

The answer depends on the state you work in, your employer's maternity leave policy, and how smart you were before getting pregnant.

If you live in a state with mandated short term disability coverage you will be paid a percentage of your gross weekly wage for six to eight weeks. Those states are California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Some employers choose to offer paid maternity leave benefits. Check with the HR department of your employer.

Most states do not have mandated short term disability, and most employers do not offer paid maternity leave benefits. What should women do? Apply for individual short term disability insurance before they conceive. Their maternity leave would then be a covered benefit.

No statute requires maternity leave. Some larger employers in the US must offer unpaid FMLA leave to employees who have at least one year of service, close to the delivery date (once incapicitated from working), and FMLA leave is available to fathers and mothers.

What is the policy on maternity leave for lawyers?

Profession has nothing to do with maternity leave policies. Those policies are set by the company that someone is working for based on their needs, and, of course, any laws that apply. An attorney that has a solo practice would pretty much be able to do what they wished, as long as they don't leave their clients in a bad position. An attorney that works for a large corporation would follow the policy of the company.

Can you collect short tern disability on maternity leave in NY?

New York has mandated short term disability insurance. It replaces up to 50% of your income, or $170 per week, whichever is less. Your maternity leave will be a covered benefit. This level of coverage is quite small for most workers in New York City, as their incomes and cost of living are much higher than average. Many women buy supplemental short term disability to get a higher level of maternity leave pay.

When do you leave for maternity leave?

This isn't so much a health question unless you are having problems carrying the baby to term and your doctor has suggested you stay in bed. If that is not the case, it is usually more of a financial question, depending on how many weeks of paid maternity leave you can expect, if any. Whether you can begin getting paid maternity leave before the birth of your baby depends on what your employer allows. -------- At my work the earliest you can leave is 11 weeks before the due week. I believe this is according to the UK law.
