Obesity is basically grossly excessive body fat, caused by too much food and not enough exercise. There is a great amount of debate over what kind of food causes obesity, but the simplest answer is that if you eat more kilojoules (units of energy) than you expend, the remainder is stored as fat. A body mass index of more than 30 means you are obese. Obesity has many health disadvantages. When your heart has to pump blood through a huge amount of fat, it has to work harder. Fatty deposits clog arteries, greatly increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. And very fat people are at a greatly increased risk of Diabetes, when the body cannot process sugar and needs to be fed sugar and injected with insulin to try to maintain blood sugar levels. Childhood obesity is basically when obesity occurs in a child. This is on the rise, with junk food and the more sendentary lifestyle of modern children (come home, flop in front of TV/computer, play Video Games all day, play no sport, do no exercise whatsoever, eat garbage) blamed. Children who are obese are at much greater risk of becoming obese adults. The eating and activity patterns laid down as children influence what the children will do as adults. Children with fat parents are far more likely to be obese than children with healthy parents. Childhood obesity is a major health concern because obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes) and chronic Heart disease are huge drains on healthcare systems. Childhood obesity is very much on the cards as a political and ethical issue, with some people going so far as to suggest that children with obese parents who are becoming obese themselves should be placed in foster care. There is a proposed strategy to improve the problem of childhood obesity. It is the 5 2 1 0 Strategy : Five servings of fruits and vegetables, two hours of exercise,

one hour of TV maximum, zero sugar intake

This strategy is best implemented through a well thought out plan of complete family participation.
