This is going to vary but storage company & location. Best thing to do is call several local storage places and get quotes from them.

I recently compared square footage prices for secured, climate-controlled warehouse storage in vaults v. self-storage with the same components. For a fair comparison, one must consider the actual cost of the space, utilities, security, environmental controls (mostly humidity) and personal property insurance.

Self-storage came to $1.44 per square foot. Warehouse storage, $1.66 before overhead and profit. O&P adds approximately $.97 to the cost for warehouse storage, same factors.

The biggest issue is insurance: coverage, exclusions, ACV or Replacement Cost, ad nauseam. I would suggest a face-to-face with your agent for an explanation, write up a memo to him summarizing the meeting and the information provided and mail it to him and to yourself, certified mail. File your copy unopened for future reference if needed.

Prices are higher in dense urban areas than in rural areas, so it's difficult to provide a definitive answer. Storage can be rented for as little as $10 a month, or as much as hundreds of dollars per month, depending on location, size, and amenities (like climate control).

Did you know that in the U.S. there are more self storage facilities than Starbucks stores?! So odds are there are more than a few facilities near you. Many specialty search websites enable you to compare the costs and features of self storage facilities without picking up the phone. Try StorageFront.com, Spare Foot, or US Storage Search.

How To Decide If Climate Controlled Storage Is Right For You?

Many home owners and renters today are forced to place some of their possessions away from their home due to space constraints, which has resulted in a boom of self storage businesses. In the self storage or off site storage realm potential renters have at least two options present: normal storage facilities and climate controlled storage units. Normal storage options are generally cement block or metal buildings with a simple roll up or garage door. This type of storage is great for objects or possessions that can stand the temperatures of any give region; however, they offer little protection from humidity and other weather related onslaughts. Climate controlled storage facilities offer complete and total protection from the elements of nature, and are often accessed by indoor corridors. Deciding if climate controlled storage is right the right choice for given item, requires careful examination of the object in question. This concept is a result of the higher cost of climate controlled facilities, which can be as much as double those of normal storage services. If the item or items that need to be stored do not mix well with the constant changes of weather, opting for a heated, cooled, and humidity controlled room is a great choice. Many consumers store items such as sports cards, comic books, cars, motorcycles, and electronics in this well protected locations. These are items that react better when kept at room temperature. This way pages do not stick, and vehicles will not rust. The length of the rental of the unit should also be taken into consideration. Sometimes more financial sense is made by renting a normal location for the warmer months and renting a climate controlled unit in the colder months. Not only does this practice save money, but it can also offer the opportunity to periodically inspect the objects for damage and wear. In many cases items that are kept in climate controlled facilities are valuable, which makes the cost of keeping them well protected from the elements a relatively simple decision. Basically, as long as the inherit value of an object can justify the additional rental fee, storage in a fixed climate location will make perfect sense.

What is the average cost to store a car?

You can store a vehicle for many different reasons. Wintering over a classic or maybe storing a racing car. Each situation will have different requirements that will justify the cost. Do you want access in and out? Does it have to be climate controlled? Do you need a garage space to work on said vehicle? Do you want an insured building? The cost will depend on your needs. If you want a barn somewhere to place your car for a few months with no in and out access that is not climate controlled, that will cost much less per month than if you want a climate controlled garage, where you can go every weekend to take your car in and out. Take into consideration the demographic as well. If you are located in an urban area, storing your car will be much more cost effective in a rural area.
