The cost to completely develop the nuclear weapon from the beginning of the war until 1945 cost America $20 billion. This includes the money they needed for research, materials, plants, and people. The bombs themselves cost $5 billion each, essentially making them the most expensive bombs to ever be dropped. Citation: Hewlett, Richard and Oscar Anderson. The New World: A History of the United States Atomic Energy Commission Vol. 1 1939-46. (Oak Ridge, Tennessee: USAEC Technical Information Center, 1972), pages 723-724.

The Manhattan Project cost 2 billion dollars, this includes the cost of the two bombs used as well as the test bomb. This would be about 23 billion US dollars today. The development and production of the delivery device (the B-29) cost more than the Manhattan Project.

The vast majority of that 2 billion was spent building new infrastructure (enrichment plants, production reactors, special chemical processing plants, etc.) not the bombs. Building the bombs themselves was quite cheap compared to the total cost of the project that built them.

These facilities were expected to produce 23 atomic bombs for use on Japan before the end of 1945 and continue producing atomic bombs in 1946 and later if necessary until Japan surrendered. Fortunately the surrender happened after only the first two had been used as it might have been impossible to meet the planned production schedule. By October one of the Hanford production reactors had to be shutdown for unanticipated repairs and the other two had to operate at very reduced power to avoid similar damage. However had the war continued it might have been decided that production was the priority and all the reactors kept running until they damaged themselves so badly they could not operate anymore!

An atomic bomb of the 'Little Boy' type, which was detonated over Hiroshima. The decision by the United States to use this bomb against Japan in August 1945 is credited with ending World War II. It was $2 billion the approximate cost of research and development of the atomic bomb by the United States, called the "Manhattan Project."

What did they build the atomic bomb for?

Atomic bombs were used by the US against Japan at the end of World War II. Once nuclear physicists and military leaders became aware of the application of nuclear fission for a weapon, it was decided to build atomic bombs, if only to counteract their development by Germany and the Axis. As things turned out, the Germans developed rockets, but never built a nuclear bomb for use with them. By the time the US had its bomb (July 16, 1945), Germany had been defeated without it, and it was used instead as intimidation against the last struggling war efforts of the Japanese. Rather than invade Japan, the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japanese cities, and implied that they had many more to use (in fact, they had no more, and could only build about two a month). With Japan's anti-invasion plans rendered useless, the Japanese surrendered six days after the second bomb was dropped (Hiroshima on August 6, and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945).

Why did the us invest so much in atom bombs?

Three countries were in a race to build the atomic bomb. The US simply managed to get it done before the others. The government not only wanted to build the bombs they also wanted the atomic technology to build atomic energy facilities and nuclear ships. That is why the investment was so crucial. We have long ago reaped back the initial investment. It cost a lot because it was all new and they had to learn how to harvest the plutonium and uranium so it was usable. There is a show about it on Military History channel.

Where did president Truman want us to fire atomic bombs?

In reality he didn't want to drop the atomic bombs on Japan because he knew the consequences it could have on Japanese citizens since he knew the devastation those bombs could cause. However he knew that if nothing was done millions of American soldiers would die trying to beat japan. So he wanted to break the will of the people So he warned japan if they didn't give up unconditionally he would drop a bomb on japan. However Japan didn't take him serious. That's when the first bomb was dropped it cause heavy civilian casualties on japan but even then japan still did not want to give up so Truman ordered another bomb to drop and it was dropped and again cause even more civilian casualties than the first bomb.Afterwards Japan surrendered unconditionally.

Why build an atomic bomb?

The U.S. originally built the atomic bomb to end WW2 because it was the only alternative to invading Japan, which would have cost many, many more lives and been worse for all involved. Now atomic bombs are used for a balance of power - "If you nuke us we'll nuke you back" is enough to stop a few wars.

What effect do you think possession of the atomic bomb will have on the role of the US in the postwar world?

Countires will have a race to build atomic bombs of their own, or fear the U.S. but only one is highly likely.

Why does the US use the atomic bomb?

When the atomic bomb was finished, Leo Szilard, a scientist in on the Manhattan Project (the Manhattan Project was the code name for the project to build and develop the atomic bomb), made a petition urging the President not to resort the use of atomic bombs in the war unless the news of the bomb had been made open in public and on terms that Japan knows and refuses to surrender. The petition was signed by over 150 scientists in on the project. A counterpetition garners only two signatures. Japan, of course, refused to surrender. The result was the flattening of two major cities in Japan.

Which US President ordered use of the atomic bomb?

Harry S. Truman (23rd US President) succeeded to the office on April 12, 1945 when Franklin D. Roosevelt died. Although both FDR and Truman had classified knowledge of the Manhattan Project, no decision could be made on the use of any A-bombs until they were shown to actually work. The first nuclear detonation came on July 16, 1945, two months after FDR died, and it was Truman's decision to actually employ them to force the surrender of Japan. Hiroshima was struck on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9.
