How many years in jail can you get from killing a police dog?

If the police dog were just a dog, you could serve at least 4 years for animal cruelty. Since a police K9 is actually a badged police agent, you would be guilty of destroying government property, and causing the death of a police agent, and would likely serve life in prison.

Related to this, while I served in the Army in Germany in 1984, it was common for the Military Police (MPs), to bring drug dogs through the units. The MPs would arrive with their dogs, clear the unit, and while we stood in formation outside, walk the dogs from room to room. It was common for service members (SMs) who were holding illegal drugs to drop different substances on the floor on their way out the door; ground coffee was the most common and seemed to be the most effective. On one occasion, a soldier from a different platoon than mine took the extra step of adding rat poison to the grounds, hoping it would make the dog ill and be even more effective. It had an affect.

As the dog entered the unit, as always, his nose went immediately to the floor. He must have huffed in a huge amount, because he made it about three more steps into the unit and collapsed in seizures. The MP was frantic. He scooped up the dog and ran for the medic station in the building across the street from our unit. The dog died, I suspect, on the way across the street.

The investigation was quick and the SM was identified. He was arrested and charged with murder. You see? the dog was a service member, actually holding the rank of corporal. The SM was court marshaled and convicted. He was quickly sentenced, and is still serving his sentence at Leavenworth Kansas...natural life.
