It depends on weather your are a legal resident of the US or not. You first have to get residency in the US before you can become a US citizen. Residency can take up to 2 yrs. in some cases. My suggestion is checking with the INS for more direct answers. Good Luck!!

In order to become a US citizen, you need to have lived in the US as a permanent resident for five years ( 3 years if you are a conditional resident), showed a continuous residence of 5 years, physical presence of 30 months in the US.All these need to be conferred with before filing in the citizenship application.

Without serving in the military, it takes five years, not counting the application process. If you marry a US citizen, it drops to three years. You can also volunteer to serve in the US military in order to get citizenship. This is all assuming that you do not acquire US citizenship through another means, such as the Child Citizenship Act of 2000.
