The correct answer is no - under current United States Law, only Males can be SEAL Team members.

Females, can, however, qualify and serve on the Navy's EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) teams. They can also become Seabees, which does include some combat training.

It is unlikely to change - it's not necessarily whether or not a female can do the job or not, most are sure they can. The concern is that a female if captured would undergo much worse torture and coercion than their male counterparts. The Propaganda value to an enemy capturing a female SEAL would also be enormous.

Current politicians and the media have made it difficult at best for current members to do their jobs without severe risk; our current "president" has already revealed sources and methods publicly that if you or I were to divulge them would land us in prison for Treason. The media and politicians have put such a stigma on losing anyone in combat, let alone a female, that it makes it difficult, almost impossible, for our society to become a bit more forward thinking like the Israelis, whose women serve in combat units of all types. That's why there is such a push on robotic alternatives being more and more often used in places ground units would be.

You may remember the young Army woman whose convoy got lost during the first few days of the Iraqi invasion, and who was ultimately captured. Though she fought bravely, after her rescue by SpecOps forces her story painted a different picture, as she reported being sexually assaulted during her capture. Our society is not yet ready to either ask that sacrifice of our women, or is our society yet ready to endure it, if it ever will be. Women serving in other combat roles was a major step forward - even female combat pilots stand the risk of capture if shot down. But SEAL's aren't pilots - they are routinely exposed to the kind of dangers that our leaders aren't willing to put women into yet. As a former Navy Vet whose wife was also Navy, both of us agree on that point.

The Navy currently has 2 years to submit to Congress why women shouldn't be allowed to serve as SEAL's, but in general, it has nothing to do with the physical or psychological requirements.

The simple fact is that SEAL's typically operate behind enemy lines, and if captured, a woman would be a higher-value propaganda hostage for an enemy, if nothing else. Women in Asian and Muslim societies are already treated as second-class citizens, and to expect a woman, even if she were a SEAL, to garner respect from guerrilla forces friendly to us in nations we're trying to support is just wishful thinking. The U.S. had problems in Saudi Arabia when we stationed women there during the Gulf War, and nearly caused a breakdown in relations by them just being there.

The bottom line is that unlike what some in our country might think, the parts of the world where people aren't that nice to men are frankly plain hostile to women.

NO. There are, llikewise no female Green Berets or similar Commando-like roles. Even in the Third Reich, women in the very gung-ho Waffen SS were largely restricted to desk jobs such as cryptographers, albeit an important desk job. Women in Gung-ho direct assault role, well, it is against the grain.,

There are no female sailors assigned to SEAL combat units - though women can be assigned to EOD teams, they are prohibited by law from serving on SEAL teams due to the unique nature of the SEAL's assignments and training.

It's not necessarily that a woman couldn't do the job - it's the propaganda value to an enemy if she's captured, and SEAL's routinely go in harm's way a lot more than most sailors do.
