Eventually he met and fell in love with Zinaida Neuhaus, wife of the pianist Genrikh. the two divorced their respective spouses, ran off, and eventually got married in 1934. Later in his life he would meet and fall in love with Olga Ivinskaia, a single mother, and after leading two separate lives with her and his family for a while he would eventually live with her exclusively till his death.
