There have been 9 US presidents who did not serve full terms in office. Vacancies of the president may occur because of: death, resignation and removal from office. Four US Presidents were assassinated and four died because of health problems.

William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia on April 4, 1841.

Zachary Taylor died of a gastrointestinal illness on July 9, 1850.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865.

James Garfield was assassinated in 1881.

William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.

Warren G. Harding died of a heart attack on August 2, 1923.

Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945.

John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

In addition to the 8 who died in office Richard Nixon resigned his presidency on August 9, 1974, facing likely impeachment following the Watergate Scandal.

On a side note, only two US Presidents have been impeached: Andrew Johnson in 1868 for political reasons and Bill Clinton in 1998 for perjury and obstruction of justice although both remained in office to complete their full terms.

six- Polk and Hayes declined to run for a second term. Tyler, Fillmore, Pierce, and Arthur were not nominated for a second term . Fillmore actually ran as a third-party candidate later. ( I did not count the presidents who died in office during their first term .)

Who set the pattern of only serving two terms as president?

George Washington did not seek a third term through age and failing health. Most subsequent presidents followed on and even if they tried for a third term the country had different ideas. It was only after FDR was elected for a fourth term that in 1947 Amendment 22 to the constitution was passed by Congress limiting the president to two terms of office. Amendment 22 was finally ratified the required number of states in 1951.

How many times same person can be selected as us president?

US: The legal limit is 10 years, not 8 as often but erroneously supposed. A President may serve as many as (but not more than) two years of a previous President's term and get elected to 2 full terms of his own. These restrictions are imposed by Section 1 of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Other applicable areas of law concerning presidential succession are set forth in Article I, Section 1, Clause 6 of the Constitution, and by the 25th Amendment. Of the "recent" Vice Presidents who assumed the Presidency after the death or resignation of their predecessors, LBJ was allowed by law to be elected to 2 terms on his own (although he declined to run a second time after being elected in 1964), while Ford could only get elected to 1 more term on his own, as LBJ had served less than 2 years of JFK's term, while Ford had served more than 2 years of Nixon's second term.
