The Associates Degree is designed to be a two year program of study particular to a specific field. Most state mandates require the completion of 64 credits in prescribed course work(this is based on a college that operates on a regular two semester academic year). However, there are some majors that may require more - especailly within the Allied Health areas.

The associates degree is designed as a two year program of study as a full-time student provided the student takes the degree as prescribed by the college, and provided the student does not require prerequisite coursework as a result of basic skills testing. There are some programs of study that may take a bit longer depending on the number of credits required. Usually these are programs within the health related fields. In addition, for students who require developmental coursework as a result of basic skills testing, it would take longer. How much longer would depend on the extent of the developmental courses they are required to take. Evidently, those individuals who attend college on a part-time bases would also extend their time in school. How much longer would depend on the credit load carried each semester. Typically, an associates degree takes between 60 and 64 credits to complete depending on the specific school, program of study, and state mandates.

What is the value of an associate's degree?

An associates degree is very valuable in obtaining a bachelors degree. This is no joke. Very few positions pay more and a dollar or 2 an hour more for an associates over a high school graduate, often not even that. However, getting an associates if very valuable in determining if you've got what it takes to earn a bachelors degree, so many people start out going for the AA and get the BA, if they can't then they can feel good about the next direction they go knowing they did what they could.

Why do many questionnaires only have 'some college' as an option for people who have an associate's degree?

I hate how some applications don't have "Associates Degree" as an option. If you have an associates degree and you are filling out an application like that, you should write "Associates Degree in ____" on the side. I think that shows pride in your achievements, and you deserve to feel proud of getting an associates degree. "Some college" does not mean "associates degree". Someone who took 2 college classes could check "some college", and you took about 20. I agree with the above contributor. Applications should have a designation for the completion of an Associates degree. An Associates degree shows completion. There are Associates degrees as an Registered nurse, in Technology, Educating, multiple Allied Health fields, and the list goes on, and on, and on. As stated above, if it were me I would make sure I indicated the Associates degree on the application. Viper1
