It depends on the length of your step. A mile is 1760 yards so if your step length is 18 inches, then there are 3520 steps. Measure your step length against a yard rule and make the calculation.

Most US stair machine use 8 inches as the step height. This works out to 7920 steps. horizontal distance does NOT count for calculating a vertical mile. For a 170 # person doing this in one hour, you will need to burn 1260 or so kilo-calories. This is a LOT of work. It can be done, though.

True stair heights do vary. so if you have a tape measure, measure the inches and divide 63360 by the inches, to find the number of stair for a mile.

If you have trouble with fractions, measure centimeters, and divide 160,934 by the height of the step in centimeters. This is how many steps in a vertical mile. Good luck and drink water!

Of course it depends on how big your steps are but a ballpark number would be 2000.

How many steps depends on who the individual is and their size, how they walk etc. What I can tell you is that there are 5,280 feet in one mile.

Statute miles vs miles?

They are identical terms for the same unit of measurement. A mile, as we know it today, is 5,280 feet. The difference between a mile and a statute mile is historical, rather than practical. Many hundreds of years ago, a mile meant different things to different people. It became necessary, eventually, for a mile to be the same distance for all concerned. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a statute was passed by the English Parliament that standardized the measurement of a mile, thus giving rise to the term 'statute' mile. The measurement of a mile at 5,280 feet is now accepted almost everywhere in the world. The mile is based on the old Roman unit of distance equal to one thousand, mil, paces (a pace is two steps). Stones were placed every mil along roads to indicate the distance to Rome, thus the term milestones, and the saying "All roads lead to Rome."

What is the history behind the mile?

MILE comes from MILLE, Latin for a thousand. A Roman mile was MILLE PASSUUM, a thousand paces. The Romans defined a pace as left foot, right foot, and back to left - what nowadays we would call two paces. Given that a pace is around 30 inches, a roman mile would be 30 inches - 5 feet - times 1000, or 5000 feet. A modern mile is 5,280 feet.
