The cheapest iPod by Apple is the iPod Shuffle which is roughly around fifty dollars. It doesn't hold very many songs. You could get an MP3 player if you have a budget that holds more songs.
Go to the main menu, then hover over where it says shuffle songs. It'll say down at the bottom. Also if you go into setting and click "About", in the list of information it will say how many songs are contained on the ipod
About 600 I'd say, since there can be about 300 sings on 1G
