Typically, a roll of sod is 18" x 36". Two rolls of sod is about one square yard. One square yard of sod is about 9 square feet. Therefore, your roll of sod is approximately 4.5 square feet (you can also get that by multiplying 36" - 3 feet x 18" - 1.5 feet).

Depending upon your application, rolls of sod come in a number of sizes. Sod can be harvested in small square slabs, rolled rectangles, or large 4-foot wide rolls. 10 square foot rolls, called "Little Rolls", are 24 inches wide by 5 feet long and comes 50 rolls to a pallet, or 500 square feet (sf) per pallet. The sod height is approximately 2" thick with 1 ½" of blade and ½ - ¾" of root base. Each roll weighs about 35 pounds. These rolls are best for the small to average sized yard. 210 square foot rolls, called "Big Rolls", are 24 inches wide by 105 feet long and will weigh about 900 pounds. We have for rent a sod installation machine for the big rolls. These rolls are best for large yards Sod blocks, used in pioneer earthen homes were 2 feet by 1 foot by 6 inches thick. Footnote: British people call it turf. Sod has a negative personal meaning.

In order to determine how many rolls of sod you'd need, you will need to know the measurements for the area you're trying to cover. In most cases, 5 rolls of sod will cover up to 50 square feet of area.

2' x 4.5', 16"x81", or 2'x5'. The harvester regulates the width as it is fixed and varies between manufacturer but the length is regulated by the farmer or operator.
