Spanish is so far the fourth language in the world and it has about 330 million speakers. Spain has the first place with about 39 million and USA second place with around 22 million and the rest is divided between all Latin America except Brazil and even Philipines. Actually it was the fourth about 20 years ago and still.

Virtually 100% of Spanish citizens speak, read, and write Spanish. It may not be their preferred language, and it may not be the language of daily life but they can use it and use it well. As many a 30% of the population may speak one of the 3 regional languages as well as Spanish. The following is from the Spanish Constitution of 1978.

Artículo 3.

Translation

1. Castilian Spanish is the official language of the Country. ALL SPANIARDS should know the language and have the right to use it.

2. Other Spanish languages may be official IN THEIR RESPECTIVE AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES when recognized by statute of the respective Autonomous Communities".

In other words they are only official in the Autonomous Communities that have legalized them. The vast majority of the inhabitants of the the the 3 Autonomous Communities that have legalized a second language (Catalonia, Galicia, and the Basque region) read, write, and speak Spanish even though it is not their preferred language.

3. The richness of the distinct kinds of languages of Spain is a cultural patrimony that must be the object of special respect and protection.

More than 95% (18 million) of people in Mexico City speak Spanish as primary language. The rest are mostly Amerindians who speak languages such as Nahuatl and are descendants of the original Aztecs who lived at the place before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th Century. There is also a small fraction (less than 1%) who speak other languages such as Chinese, French, Yiddish or Korean, mostly by first-generation immigrants now living in Mexico.
