Most tornadoes, about 98%, don't kill anybody. Of the 2% of tornadoes that are killers the average death toll is between 2 and 3. Tornadoes with 10 or more fatalities are not common. Occasionally, however, death tolls may be in the dozens when very strong tornadoes hit populated areas.

The highest death toll from a single tornado was about 1300 in a tornado in Bangladesh. Accurate records are not available for most countries, but in the U.S. tornadoes have killed nearly 20,000 people since 1875.
The deadliest tornado in world history struck Bangladesh on April 26, 1989, killing an estimated 1300 people.

However, most tornadoes never kill anyone.

On average 60-80 people die every year from tornadoes, with most of those deaths occurring in the U.S.

Overall, most tornadoes do not result in any fatalities, and those that do usually don't result in more than 5 deaths. On rare occasions the death toll can rise into the dozens. A handful of tornadoes have had death tolls in the hundreds.

The deadliest tornado that has happened this past year was the Joplin, Missouri tornado on May 22. 159 people were killed and 1,150 were injured. The most recent tornadoes to claim lives in the U.S. were two tornadoes on November 16 that in North and South Carolina that killed 2 and 3 people respectively.
