The largest tornado record, which skirted the edge of of El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31, 2013 killed 8 people. Despite its enormous size at 2.6 miles wide, this EF3 tornado mostly stayed over open country. Had it struck El Reno directly, the death toll would have been much higher.

The largest (though by no means the worst) tornado ever recorded was the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado of May 31, 2013. It was 2.6 miles wide and killed 8 people.

Smaller, but still very large tornadoes have resulted in much higher death tolls. The worst tornado on world history, the Daulatpur-Saturia tornado of Bangladesh, killed an estimated 1300 people. Its path width is not known as no detailed survey was conducted.

That is difficult to determine, as among the very strongest tornadoes on record, it is difficult to say whether one was stronger than the other. Actual wind measurements are rare, and only one of the candidates listed here had its winds measured. Note that a higher death toll does not necessarily mean a stronger tornado, as death toll also depends on other factors such as how many people are in the path of it. That said, here are some candidates with their death tolls:

  • The Sherman, Texas tornado of May 15, 1896: 73 deaths
  • Tri-State tornado of March 18, 1925: 695 deaths
  • The Jarrell, Texas tornado of May 27, 1997: 27 deaths
  • The Moore, Oklahoma tornado of May 3, 1999: 36 deaths
  • The Smithville, Mississippi tornado of April 27, 2011: 23 deaths
  • The Hackleburg, Alabama tornado of April 27, 2011: 72 deaths.
