A Social Security number consists of 9 digits and is structured as follows:

000-00-0000

The first set of three digits is called the "Area Number", and is based on the mailing address ZIP code used by the applicant.

The second set of two digits is called the "Group Number"and is a series of odd and even numbers. The first set consists of odd numbers running from 01-09. Once these odd group numbers have been used, even group numbers take their place and range from 10-98. Once all of these group numbers are exhausted, the order is reversed, with even group numbers (2-8) coming first, followed by odd group numbers (11-99).

The third set of four digits is called the "Serial Number", and runs consecutively from 0001-9999.

A social security number has nine digits in the pattern 123-45-6789. There are other places that numbers may appear on the actual card, but they don't have any real significance.

How do you make a social security number valid?

You don't. The number you're assigned by the Social Security Administration will already be valid. A number you get any other way is invalid and can't be made valid. (Even if the number itself is "valid" in the sense "it's an actual social security number", it's not valid for you unless it's your social security number.)

Does a Social Security number show your age?

A Social Security Number can be broken down into three parts.Area Number, Group Number and Serial Number. The first three numbers represent the state in which the person was issued the Social Security Number (NOT neccessarily the state of birth, merely the location the card was issued.)Group Numbers: A two didget number by which all SSNs are broken down into smaller blocks to make administration easier. The group designations do not run sequentially but rather in their own pattern.Serial Numbers: Within a group designation serial numbers run consecutively from 0001 through 9999 THEREFORE, the SSN does not neccessarily designate your age. It cannot be used to show your exact age but it could be used comparitively. For example... If given two individuals with Social Security Numbers from the same Area and Designation but one had the last four 3004 and the second 4599 you could "guess" that the first individual received their Social Security Number first and therefore "may" be slightly older.

Does a green card give you a Social Security number?

Not automatically; However, a "green card" (lawful permanent residency for aliens) makes someone elligible for a "right to work" social security number. One must request it at a Social Security office. A green card does not make you eligible for a "right to work" social security number. The "right to work" social security number is given to an alien that has received a "work authorization document". Having a green card will make you eligible for a regular social security number, with no restrictions related to it. In most of the cases when you are applying for a Green card, you might already have a Social Security number (this apply when the Permanent residence is through adjustment of status). This number will be the same when you get your permanent residence, only that if you had restrictions to work it will change to NO restrictions. If you are applying to a Green card though marriage, you will be entitled to apply to your social Security number once you receive the letter of approval from the USCIS

What if you don't have a social security number?

That would make you one of the very few people in the United States, who has not yet been made liable for and therefore not subject to any revenue tax under the so called "social security" revenue scheme. If you don't have a social security number, rejoice and suffer through all the mindless lessons you must teach those errant fools who will insist that you must have a social security number in order to do business. Explain to these souls that you do not need a social security number in order to do any banking, or to contract with other people, and if they require some sort of PIN number for accounting purposes you will gladly authorize a PIN number as long as it is made clear that PIN number is not a social security number. If it is not made clear the PIN number is not a social security number, you run the risk of committing fraud, and since your not liable for and or subject to any social security tax, you don't need to give the tax collectors some reason to harass you. Good luck with being free. If you don't like that idea, you can always go to any tax collector office and apply for a social security number. If that is your choice then extra luck to you, as you'll need it.
