Prior to writing her major published works, Jane Austen wrote a series of minor pieces called her Juvenilia. These were all short experimental pieces, mostly intended to be read aloud to her family in the evenings.

She wrote a play called Sir Charles Grandison in 1793, and rewrote it in 1800. It was not published during her lifetime.

Her epistolary novel, Lady Susan was written in 1794 and rewritten in 1805. It was not published during her lifetime.

She worked on a novel called The Watsons in 1804. This also was not published during her lifetime.

Her published works, in the order in which they appeared were:

  • 1811 - Sense and Sensibility
  • 1813 - Pride and Prejudice
  • 1814 - Mansfield Park
  • 1815 - Emma
  • 1817 - Persuasion (published posthumously)
  • 1817 - Northanger Abbey (published with Persuasion)

She also wrote poems, letters, prayers, and, in 1815, a satirical piece called Plan of a Novel.

It is not always easy to know when she wrote any given piece, since things were written, rewritten, and edited again. For example, Northanger Abbey was sold to a publisher in 1803. When he failed to publish it, Jane Austen apparently edited it to some extent, and repurchased the rights so she could sell it to another publisher. She left very few manuscripts, and most of the letters she wrote were burned or censored.
