Viking ships were long wooden ships that held 10-20 men and were moved by oars or sails. They were not equiped for battle and were used to carry men to raid or to battle on land.

In the year 801, the Danes were the first to look beyond their own territory for land, trade and plunder. They had already settled Norway, Sweden and other surrounding areas for many centuries. Although the earliest date given for a Viking raid is 787, when a group of men from Norway sailed to Portland, Dorset. The men were from Norway, but they could just as easily have been Danes settling Norway. But anyway, this raid wasn't really a raid, just a small heated encounter. Hope you can use the facts. I'm a Dane myself, and there's a national thing going on between the Scandinavian countries (who was first with these thing), so you might hear something slightly different from a Swede; I have family from Norway, so I'm multi-Scandinavian and have no reason to say anything but the true.
