There were about 15 major gods of mythological nature in Mesopotamia, along with the minor gods. Although the Code of Hammurabi does not mention gods, he felt he had to write the code to please his gods. It is not certain in which gods Hammurabi believed, but evidence indicates this appeasement.

It was, however, the region in which the tower of Babel was erected & God confounded the languages. So a measure of confusion existed & still is a barrier today in the cultures of that area.
