In the Excel spreadsheet versions prior to 2002 or Office XP there are 65,536 rows and 256 columns , 65,536 x 256 = 16,777,216 cells or 'boxes'. Later versions of Excel have far more - millions of rows and thousands of columns. EDIT The latest version of Microsoft Excel that comes with Office 2007 has 17,179,869,184 cells in all. The columns are letter all the way to XFD and there are 1,048,576 rows.

That depends on the version you have. Up to and including Excel 2003, the standard amount of columns has been 256 and there has been 65,536 rows. That makes 16,777,216 cells. Since Excel 2007 the maximum number of rows per worksheet is now 1,048,576 and the number of columns is 16,384. That makes 17,179,869,184 cells.

The original version of Excel had a maximum limit of 16,777,216 (16.8 million) cells within a single worksheet and that continued to be the worksheet limit until it was later expanded in version 2007 to the current limit of 17,179,869,184 (17.2 billion) cells.

Originally within each worksheet, Excel provided columns A to IV, which is 256 (2^8) columns; and 65,536 rows (2^16); therefore 256 x 65,536 = 16,777,216 (2^24).

As mentioned, in version 2007 the worksheet maximum size limits were greatly expanded, providing columns A to XFD, which is 16,384 (2^14) columns; and 1,048,576 rows (2^20); therefore 16,384 x 1,048,576 = 17,179,869,184 (or 2^34).

Since Excel 2007, there are 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns in each worksheet. So the total number of cells would be 1,048,576 rows X 16,384 columns which is 17,179,869,184 cells. As there are 3 worksheets in a workbook by default, that is 51,539,607,552 cells in the workbook.
