Archers standing in a depression are less likely to be seen by an opposing army. A cavalry charge against the enemy may not see Archers secreted in a pit. Sutch Archers could rise at an opotune moment, cause havoc amongst the cavalry, or foot soldiers for that matter. Cavalry have been know to ride over Archer 'pits' without causung much harm to the Archers who then have a second chance to harrass the enemy
