Depends on who we are.

If we are lazy, barely any calories.

If you are healthy, and you exercise a ton, probably 500-1000.

But I don't recommend sitting on the couch, stuffing cookies and ice cream.

That's complicated to answer. If you starve yourself (eat 1200- calories/day) for more than few days at a time, your body can enter preservation mode (AKA "starvation mode") and it will be shocked into lowering metabolism to match your low caloric intake by reducing bodily functions that wouldn't be necesary to survival. So basically, If you suddenly started eating 800 calories/day or so, you could actually survive for long periods of time w/o losing much weight, though you would feel miserable and be low on energy. Once the body returns to a normal caloric intake, however, any weight lost would be regained almost immediately as fat, whereas much of it would have initially be muscle.

NOTE: In case you are asking this hoping to lose weight quickly don't let your daily calories go below roughly 1200 on any given day. That way, your body will not go into starvation mode and most of the weight you lose will be fat, not muscle. This will also help you to return immediately return to eating nearly as much as before once you are done dieting without regaining much weight.

The amount of recommended calories per day varies depending on age, gender, height, weight, and level of activity. According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, the daily calorie intake for adult women should be between 1,600 and 2,400, depending on level of activity. For adult men it ranges from 2,000 to 3,000 a day.

The more active you are, the more calories are needed per day.

A man between the ages of 19 and 30 with a sedentary lifestyle needs 2,400 calories; a more active male requires 200 more.

Females between the ages of 19 and 30 with a sedentary lifestyle require 2,000 calories per day; a more active lifestyle requires 200 more as well.
