The parable of the Good Samaritan is about a man who get's mugged and robbed on his way to the city. Someone, who is walking on the same road, see him and walks right by him. Then a priest comes along, but he walks by also. Then a Samaritan walks by and sees him. He binds the man's wounds, sets him on his horse, and takes him to the city. In the city, the Samaritan takes the man to an Inn and pays for the man's stay.

I wish I knew where it is found in The Bible, but I'm no help there. Sorry

Luke 10:25-37

The priest could not help the man because then he would be ritually unclean and could not enter the temple to do his job for several weeks until he completed a ritual cleansing involving many baths and prayers and sacrifices. It was too much trouble.

There were also others mentioned that passed and did not help, for reasons of less significance than the priest.

The Samaritan had much less to lose in offering help due to his low social standing.

Some guy wanted to know who the 'neighbour' in the Old Testament referred to. Jesus then recounted the story of the good Samaritan. Basically a man from a community despised by Jews who exhibited far better Jewish/Christian behaviour than the two 'respectable' citizens who had passed by earlier.

Basically a man lay injured from having been assaulted by robbers. The 'religious' types ignored his plight but the infidel (the Samatitan) took pity and helped.

Thus your 'neighbour' is the person who shows the most humanitarian response to your suffering.

The problem with the parable is that the Samaritan is merely rewarded with 'Neigbourliness' and is still consigned to hell, despite his good deeds, because he has never had the good fortune to have been raised by Jews or Christians. Meanwhile the religious types who ignored the sufferer's plight probably squeezed into heaven because they knew who to pray to.

A beautiful parable, that sadly seems incomplete.... Come on Jesus, what did become of the good Samaritan? Does he reside with you, or is he damned because he was born on the wrong side of the tracks?

The actions of the Samaritan to the injured man showed us his love for his fellow men. This parable shown us that the pius are not as charitalble as they profess to be, but a common man can have as an attribute all of the love that a man can give to a complete stranger.

Jesus told this parable in answer to a 'certain lawyer', an expert in the teachings of the Law of Moses. The lawyer was probable trying to trick the Jesus, to put Him thoroughly to the test. Perhaps he thought that the Jesus would repudiate the law. To him, Jesus was only a Teacher, and eternal life was something he could earn or merit.

The lawyer asked Jesus 'who is my neighbour?' and Jesus told the parable of the good Samaritan.

Jesus was teaching the lawyer that his neighbour is any person. The Jews hated the Samaritans. But in the parable it was a Samaritan who came to the Jewish merchants aid. The Jewish priest and Levite walked around the man in trouble and did not stop.

This parable was told in answer to two questions: what shall I do to inherit eternal life (Lke 10:25a) ? and who is my neighbour (Luke 10:29b)?

Through this parable Jesus showed the true spiritual nature of Israel at that time.

The robbery-victim (almost certainly a Jew) lay half dead on the road to Jericho. The Jewish priest and Levite refused to help; perhaps they feared it was a plot, or were afraid that they too might be robbed if they tarried. It was a hated Samaritan who came to the rescue, who applied first aid, who took the victim to an inn, and who made provision for his care. To the Samaritan, a Jew in need was his neighbor.

Then Jesus asked the question. Which of the three proved neighbor to the helpless man? The one who showed mercy, of course.

The lesson is all people are your neighbours even your enemies so - "love your neighbour as yourself".

Give an example of a parable told by Jesus where he showed that prejudice was wrong?

After years of anger between the Jews and the Samaritans, there was a real prejudice between these two groups in Jesus' day(John4:9), so Jesus related a parable. A man who had been attacked by robbers during his journey from Jerusalem to Jericho, was left wounded on the road. Two Jewish religious leaders did NOT stop to help their brother, but crossed to the other side of the road to avoid him. A Samaritan, however, stopped and bandaged the man's wounds. Then he arranged for the man's care so that he could recover from his injuries. That Samaritan proved himself a real neighbor. (Luke 10:29-37) Jesus' parable helped his listeners to realize that their prejudice blinded them to the good qualities in others.

Why is the prodigal son an effective lesson?

The parable was told as a rebuke to the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus' time. Jesus came to call the nation of Israel to repent but the scribes and Pharisees thought Jesus should be talking with them the "spiritual leaders" not the common people. The father in the parable represents God and shows His desire for Israel to repent and turn to Him. The son represent the nation of Israel and the oldest son represents the scribe and Pharisees. People often use this parable to illustrate how God is waiting for people to repent and turn to Him. It is effective because it is an interesting story which people can associate with but this not the primary interpretation.

Can a parable and legend mean the same thing?

(parable) noun: (New Testament) any of the stories told by Jesus to convey his religious message (Example: "The parable of the prodigal son") or noun: a short moral story (often with animal characters)(legend) noun: a story about mythical or supernatural beings or events or noun:brief description accompanying an illustration___________ The two terms are not usually used interchangably. A legend usually refers to a story from the far past that may or may not be true... and a parable is a story that we know isn't true, but is used to illustrate a point or teach a lesson.
