It is important to know that the nerve is removed not killed. If a tooth has had to fight a long infection, many times the tooth is dead, which means it is unable to fight the infection present inside the canal. The treatment for this situation is root canal therapy. Most of the time the patient does not feel anything throughout the procedure except the delivery of local anesthesia. The treatment goal is to clean the canal space and remove all nerve tissue and bacteria that is present inside the canal. A successful root canal treatment will remove the pain experienced by the patient immediately unless the infection has spread outside the root around the tooth, then it may still be sensitive to biting forces. So to answer your question, the nerve is removed and therefore there is ideally no nerve tissue left in the tooth after the procedure.

If the nerve has been removed in your tooth, you need to have a root canal done in order to keep your tooth in your mouth. A tooth that has had a root canal treatment and ideally a crown as well, has about 85% chances of staying in your mouth for the rest of your life.

Why does your rotten tooth hurt?

A rotted tooth hurts because the hard enamal covering the inner nerve has either softened or been stripped away. This allows infection, pressure and temperature differences to trigger the nerve which causes a toothache.

What is the difference between normal tooth cavity filling and root canal treatment?

A filling is a way to restore or repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay or a fracture that has not reached the pulp chamber of the tooth. If the damage has reached the pulp chamber (the interior of the tooth where the nerve and blood supply are located) a root canal procedure needs to be done.In a simple filling, the decayed part of the tooth is removed and the space is filled and carved to resemble the natural shape of the tooth. In a root canal procedure, the decay is removed along with the nerve and the blood supply. The space is filled with a rubber material called gutta percha. Following a root canal, the tooth frequently needs to be restored with a crown because the tooth will become brittle and at risk of fracturing.A root canal is more involved than a filling and generally will cost more and sometimes take more than one appointment to complete.

I got one wisdom tooth pulled on Friday why does my mouth smell rotten?

If your mouth is sore and you haven't been brushing, that could be why. If you have been brushing, go immediately to your dentist, it could be an infection

Should a tooth crack after a root canal?

Roots do not grow back once a dentist drills into the tooth and removes the pulp (the roots and tissue inside the tooth). After that, it is dead and it cannot grow back. Make sure that the dentist (after he fits the crown but before it is permanently sealed) does an X-ray of the tooth to make sure the crown that was ordered properly fits the tooth. Sometimes to the human eye it appears so, but an X-ray can reveal the tiniest opening, which can lead to a re-infection and necessity of the tooth to be pulled.

What is gelfoam in dentistry?

Gelfoam is a material placed in a socket where a tooth has recently been removed. It reduces pain and bleeding.

Is a root canal surgery?

It is a procedure used to save an abscessed tooth by removing the dental pulp (nerve), usually if the tooth is dead or has had the pulp exposed (due to cavities or fractures). After the pulp is removed and any infection has been resolved, the hollow area left behind after the nerve is removed is filled in with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Before the days of root canals, most damaged teeth needed to be replaced.AnswerWhen a cavity has reached the living part of the tooth, the pulp where the nerve lies, the dentist proceeds to heal the tooth with a root canal in order to avoid a bacterial infection. Once the bacteria have penetrated the pulp, the tooth must be devitalized or have its living tissue removed. The external tooth is still held fast by the root, but in most cases needs to have a cap or splint fitted.

Do you need a crown after nerve removal?

After a root canal has been performed, the tooth will often become brittle and weak. This may lead to the tooth fracturing under normal stress. Depending on how the tooth fractures, it may not be possible to restore the tooth with a crown at that point. The tooth then will probably require extraction. Consider a crown a kind of insurance policy on the root canal.

What do you do with a infected tooth extraction site my child had a tooth removed and now it has a puss pocket in between the gum and her cheek is this normal she has been on antiboitics for 17 days?

Take her straight back to the dentist first. You can rinse with salt water 3 or 4 times a day and Listerine (Listerine kills bacteria in the mouth) twice a day-but the best option is to get the dentist to look at it-she could have a cyst.

Can braces help gaps that have been left by a tooth that decayed or fell out instead of using dental implants to replace the gap?

If the whole tooth has been pulled out then no. You will need a bridge to replace the tooth. I just had one done a few months ago and there is nothing to it. The bridge is very short, and I don't even realize I have it in my mouth.
