Unless you have some contractual agreement requiring them to do so, an employer is not obligated to pay for any of your insurance after termination. You will have the right to continue coverage under HIPAA at your expense however.

If mandatory insurance policy is provided through an employer and the insured dies shortly after termination of employment does the policy pay out?

It is going to depend on when the last premium payment was paid, if it was a portable product and how long it really had been after termination. This is because not all policies and companies are the same.

Can your employer drop your insurance when you are out of work for an injury?

I presume your asking about Medical/Health Insurance? If you are out of work for a work-related injury [ie. you're on work comp] your company can terminate your medical/health insurance. I don't think it applies to short-term or long-term disability as those are health/medical benefits to begin with.

What exactly is COBRA insurance?

COBRA is offered to workers who become unemployed through voluntary or involuntary termination of their job, but it is not offered to every terminated employee. Before you do anything, determine your COBRA eligibility by talking to your former employer. Spouses and dependent children are eligible for COBRA coverage through their unemployed family member as long as they were covered before termination occurred.

Can your employer cancel your health insurance when you are on short term or long term disability because you did not make a payment on your insurance like is normally done through your paycheck?

Your employer's obligation to pay premiums normally stops when your paycheck does, that is, when your medical and personal leave is exhausted, and there is nothing left to deduct the premiums with. When that happens, the insurance company, not your employer, cancels your health insurance for lack of premiums. There are many ways to avoid this tragedy, including donation of leave by co-workers, if permitted, to keep the paychecks coming, or employer paying premiums for you until you are able to return to work. Good luck. JJ
