Depends on how wide a weld deposit you want and how thick the metal is. Short blunt points distribute a wide arc and are used on thick materials. A fine point concentrates the heat and is used on thin metal. You will develope your own techniques. Aluminum welding usually employs pure tungsten and you would form a ball on the end by using reverse polarity and establishing an arc long enough to form a ball the size you want then changing to A C to weld.

How long should you leave the taper in to gauge your lip from a 18 to 16?

You shouldn't need to leave the taper in at all, a lot of tapers have a notch in the back that jewelry fits into, so when you slide the taper through your body, the jewelry can slide through the hole behind it. So just use lubrication and slide it through with a consistent amount of pressure in one swift motion.

When performing overhead welding what additional safety equipment should be worn in order to protect the legs and feet from falling molten metal?

When welding one should always wear certain clothing. Leather boots (steel toe desirable), work pants (such as jeans) that cover the top of the boots, heavy cotton long sleeve shirt, welding beanie, gloves, and safety glasses. In most instances these items will protect you from sparks and weld spatter whether you are welding on a flat, vertical or overhead surface. A leather jacket can be worn to protect your shoulders and arms. Molten metal should not be falling if you are welding correctly. If you are sitting, while welding, a leather apron should be used.
