How long is purgatory?

There is reason to believe Purgatory itself will last until the end of the world. There are references in the writings of the saints to souls who must remain in Purgatory until the end of the world before being admitted to Heaven. Other references speak of souls who visit Purgatory very fleetingly, only a few hours, and then they are admitted to Heaven.

You will be in Purgatory until all sin is paid in full and you are perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. You will be cleansed until your are clean so if you use foul language then molten liquidate will be poured into your mouth to clean it out.

Roman Catholic AnswerWe do not know for two reasons: primarily it is up to God, and in the second place, it depends on the person. Puragatory is the name for God's love enabling a person who dies, but is not yet perfect, to become perfect in order to enter heaven. We know that there is such a state because God, in His infinite mercy has revealed this to us in The Bible, and in Tradition. But we do not know much about it, for one thing, it is no longer in this world, so we have no idea how time is applied there. If a soul dies perfect and in God's love, then it enters heaven immediately. Also, if the soul loves perfectly and receives a plenary indulgence before death, then there is no purgatory at all. All that we do know is that purgatory is very painful, we no longer have a body or anything to distract us and the pain is very bad. But, we know that we are saved, so we are happy.
