However, there are States that have "the 3 strike laws" concerning felony convictions.So in those states a felony conviction for animal cruelty could theoretically net a 25 year to life sentence, not as punishment for animal cruelty, but as punishment for obtaining 3 felony convictions of any combination.

A very long time. Dog fighting is a serious crime and authorities will not hesitate to give you serious time in the slammer. Also, don't even think about it. It is very evil to fight dogs. It is sad because former fighting dogs are scared of leashes, while most dogs are estatic when you take it down.
