== == This depends on what you use your computer for and how often you add software to it. I use my computer 24/7 quite intensively, so I defragment every other day. My computer is set to do so at a time when I am not using it. I recommend that the average user defragment once a week. I also recommend looking at getting O&O Defrag if this is something that you believe is very important to your computer.

You might have to free up space to begin a defragmentation; the computer needs spare space to temporarily move the files around.

How fast a defrag is will depend on factors like Free space Level of fragmentation Program used The Windows defragmenter needs atleast 15% free space to do a defrag, however third party defrag programs like Diskeeper do the job efficiently even with as less as 5% free space. Higher the fragmentation, more the time.Generally the more often you defrag it should hardly take a few minutes each time. The Windows defragger is considered slower than dedicated third party defragmenters which also have the option of being installed in automatic mode.

The rule of thumb is once a month.

If you do a lot of software installing and uninstalling, or otherwise move files around your computer a lot and the hard disk is often more than half full, you might want to do it more often. If you rarely shuffle things about and the drive is always nearly empty, you can get away with doing it less often

It depends on two things. How big your drive is, and how fragmented it is. So any where from a few minutes to, I've experienced, over and hour. Also defrag is faster with a program like Diskeeper which can be set to defrag automatically as compared to the slow Windows program.

This is entirely dependent on the size of the hard drive an its contents. One might say a fairly clean hard drive should defrag in less than 30 minutes. If your hard drive is cluttered and has not been defragged for a very long period of time it can take several hours.

I agree. It also depends on the amount if free space available as well the defrag utility. The built in utility can take several hours while a powerful automatic defragger does the job much faster. The more regular the defrags, the lesser it takes each time.

That depends on a number of factors.. How big the hard-drive is, how badly the fragmentation is and how much spare space is available on the drive.

The larger the hard-drive, the more sectors need to be managed.

The higher the fragmentation, the more data needs to be re-organised.

The lower the free-space, the smaller the chunks of fragmented files can be moved.

Depending on the size of the drive, and the amount of fragmentation, the process can take anything from a few minutes to over an hour !

Will downloading games affect your computer?

Well, its a yes and no answer. Downloading a few games, no problem. But if you were to download many unrelenting waves of different games, over and over again, it can cause you'r computer to slow down significantly. If you don't think you haven't downloaded that many games and you'r computer is starting to slow down, defrag you'r computer. To learn how to defrag search, "How do I defrag my computer". This should show you, step by step, how to defrag you'r computer, which makes you'r computer go faster. You can also make it faster manually by deleting games or other things that you don't want. You can't just delete them, though. You have to uninstall them by right clicking them and clicking the "uninstall" button. Hope this helps!!!

Can you harm your computer if you de-frag to often?

Yes, defrag your computer every month. Make sure you do it right, and not to mess up.

Do you have to be on the Internet to defrag?

No! In fact, it's best that you're NOT online while doing a defrag. Anytime defrag hits a part of a hard drive where the information is changing, defrag restarts doing that portion of the drive. While on the Internet, your PC is constantly sending and receiving files and changing what's on the hard drive. Your defrag will take a lot longer.

Why wont your computer let you defrag?

If you have certain programs open, such as Zone Alarm, they keep writing to the disc, which cause the Defrag program to start over again. Do a Control +Alt+ Delete to find out which programs are running, and shut down all but Explorer, the drive that you are working with, and the Defrag program.
