It's not really about how far, but rather about for how long and how hard you'd have to ride.

On good roads, that'll take more miles than it would on poor roads.

I can go through 800 calories in less than one hour, most would probably do it in 90 minutes or so, some may need two hours or even more.

Depends on how heavy the going is, and how hard you go at it.

Counting calories makes more sense if you do it in relation to how long and how hard you work out, not how far you go.

But at a medium effort, it'll take about one hour to use up 500 calories.

Your body is constantly burning calories, even at rest. You can't avoid it.

The harder you work the more calories you use, so the most that can happen is that as you get on the bike, you will begion to burn more calories.

And how long - well, that would depend on how many extra calories you're trying to use up.

There are many factors that would go into calculating this. If a 150 lb. person were to walk at a 3 mph pace, you would need to walk between 6 and 7 miles total to burn 500 calories. If the pace were increased to 5 mph, a walk of slightly over 4 miles in distance would burn 500 calories.

It should take a normal healthy aged person anywhere from 30 mins to 70 mins to burn 500 calories depending on the level of speed and power they're pedaling

It depends how fast you go and where you cycle. Slow-medium speed (10mph) on an easy flat surface would be about 1.5hours, up a hill would be about 45min-1 hour.
