Hi! Well, part of that would depend on your education already. I am assuming you already have a bachelor's of science in nursing. In that case, you will just need to start by applying to medical school. Once you get accepted, medical school will take four years. Following that, you will have one year of rotating or general internship and three years of residency in anesthesia. Basically, to become an anesthesiologist, it will take you eight years in addition to what you have already completed.

Another similar option would be to look into becoming a nurse anesthesist. Because you are already a nurse, this option will take less time. Once you have are an RN, and you have experience of at least one year in acute care nursing, you can apply to a CRNA program. These programs typically take between 24-36 months to complete, and they actually do many of the same tasks as an anesthesiologist. Obviously, they don't make as much money, but they certainly make a good living. Typically they will earn around 160-180k per year, though starting salary is more like 110-130k. Much of this depends on other factors such as where you work, and live, etc...

Anyway, it's up to you to decide whether or not the schooling is worth it. It will certainly be a lot of work, but if that's where you want to go, the effort will pay off. If you are unsure about becoming an anesthesiologist, a CRNA is just another option that will allow you to head in the same direction with less schooling.
