Under ideal conditions, a paper carton can decompose in about 3 weeks. Ideal conditions would be chopped up in the middle of an actively decomposing compost pile. A polystyrene carton takes hundreds of years to fully biodegrade.
A milk carton made of stiff paper and coated with wax will decompose in a wet landfill in two or three months.
A milk carton made of stiff paper and lined with aluminum foil will biodegrade only on the outside. The foil inside will remain intact for many years.

Styrofoam cups last in the landfill for hundreds of years. Paper cups break down much faster. Paper would only last for a month.
